What is its purpose?
The vagina performs many functions. It accepts the penis during sexual intercourse, captures the sperm during ejaculation, acts as a pathway to the egg, provides sexual pleasure, acts as the birth canal during the birthing process, and allows the elimination of menstrual fluids from the body.

Where do you find it?
The vagina is found inside her body. It extends from the vaginal opening to the cervix (the opening to the uterus).

Description
The vagina, like the eye, is a self-cleansing organ. It is a muscular "barrel" around 3-4 inches long in its non-aroused state, but it may be a bit longer in women who have given birth. The average vaginal length may seem shallow in relation to the average penis length, but during sexual arousal it expands, extending the length of the vagina. The vagina of a sexually mature woman is elastic enough to accommodate almost any size penis.

The vagina is lined with mucous membranes, similar to the lining of the mouth. The vaginal lining is pink and glistening and has folds, called rugae, which give the vagina a ribbed texture. These folds are more pronounced in younger ladies and gradually disappear as a lady grows older. Shortly after stimulation, the vagina begins to lubricate, forming what looks like beads of sweat all over the vaginal walls.

The vagina is angled upwards at around a 65 degree angle, which very closely corresponds to the angle of the average erect penis. The vagina isn’t a wide-open gaping hole. It’s a collapsed space that expands and contracts when excited or penetrated. The vagina stretches out when the lady gets excited. When in an excited state, the cervix and uterus pull up and back, extending the vagina by about 1-3 inches. The back of the vagina balloons out to create more space. When in a non-aroused and un-penetrated state, the walls of the vagina collapse against each other, sort of like a fire hose.

What do you need to know about it?
· The term "vagina" is often used incorrectly to refer to the entire vulva. The vagina refers only to the internal, muscular barrel. Referring to the vulva as the vagina is akin to referring to the mouth as the throat.

· Vaginal Nerve Endings Fact: 2/3 of the nerve endings in the vagina are located in the first 1/3 of the vagina, so focus much of your attention there, when stimulating the inside of the vagina.

· The first 2 inches of the vagina are the tightest during intercourse due to the vaginal swelling and engorgement of blood.

· You can’t always accurately determine a woman’s level of arousal just by her vaginal wetness. Sometimes she may not be wet, but is very aroused. Or sometimes she could be really wet and it may have to do with something else. Factors that can affect her ability to lubricate include estrogen levels, where she is in her menstrual cycle, diet, and stress. Vaginal lubrication isn’t an automatic result of sexual arousal. And lack of lubrication isn’t an indication of lack of sincere arousal.

· A woman’s scent can be affected by having unprotected sex, as sperm is highly alkaline and causes the pH level of the vagina to rise, thus giving advantage to bacteria. Her body usually adjusts back to normal levels fairly quickly, especially when the sperm is familiar. If she has had unprotected sex with a new partner or with several partners, it may take the body longer to adjust, due to immunological factors resulting from unfamiliarity of the sperm.

· Vaginal Acidity Fact:The vagina is fairly acidic, with the average vagina rating a 4.0 to 5.0 on the pH scale.

· According to one source, there are approximately 1,000 recognized slang terms for the vagina.

· Average age of menopause: 48-49 years.

· Average ovum size: 1/175th of an inch (0.14 mm.), slightly smaller than the period ending this sentence. Interestingly, this is the largest cell in the human body.

· Average duration of ovum fertility: The female egg will remain fertile for about 24 to 48 hours.

· Average number of ova: 400,000. Unlike men, who continually replenish their supply of sperm, women have a set amount of ova that's determined at birth. Only 400 are ever released during a woman's lifetime, and their quality deteriorates over time, so if you plan on conceiving a child, your chances are better before age 40, than after.
