This
is by far the most sensitive part of a woman's genitals. It is
through stimulation of this little structure, either directly
or indirectly, that virtually all orgasms are triggered.
The
clitoris has thousands of nerve endings in its tiny head and for
some women this makes direct stimulation too intense to be pleasurable
and sometimes actually painful. For such women massaging the mons
and labia majora so as to indirectly stimulate their clitoris
is far more enjoyable.
Clitori
vary greatly in size. Examples of ones up to 5 centimetres long
and as thick as a finger can be found on the Internet, while others
little more than the size of a grain of rice can also be found.
Size
is irrelevant to function though masturbatory techniques possible
are affected by clitoris and hood size. Though the clitoris may
swell when being stimulated it cannot become erect in the way
a penis can as it lacks the necessary internal structures to do
this. Importantly, orgasm can be achieved without there being
any need for clitoral swelling (some girls say they never notice
their clitoris and other genitals swelling during stimulation).
The
clitoris is very sensitive to male hormones and some steroidal
medications. Perminant increases in size of one or more centimetres
are common when such compounds are taken. This does not improve
function though for cosmetic reasons some women have been known
to take anabolic steroids and testosterone to achieve this type
of growth. Various vacuum based techniques also exist for enlarging
clitori though long term effectiveness is unclear.
